Last week, members of the Living with Water team visited Mansfield City Council and Severn Trent Water, to share knowledge of nature-based solutions and ways in which they are protecting communities from surface water flood risk.

Similar to the Living with Water schemes being implemented in Hull and the East Riding, the team shared best practice on technical aspects of the build, the challenges with modelling the schemes, along with effective community engagement plans and ongoing partnership.

Nature-based solutions are a great way to work with nature to retain surface water. Slowly reducing flow into sewers and also allowing infiltration directly into the ground during peak storm events.

Not only does this have positive benefits on the environment, by working with nature creating new habitats and biodiversity, it's reducing flood risk and provides communities with beautiful green spaces ideal for health and wellbeing.

General manager for Living with Water Emma Brown said: “It’s been a productive day sharing knowledge and best practice about how we can integrate nature-based solutions into areas at flood risk today. With climate change happening, these SuDS not only reduce flood risk, but can have so many wider benefits for all for the future.”

For more information on sustainable drainage solutions take a look at our film that explains all and look out for SuDS next time you’re out and about in Hull and the East Riding.
