Pets
Living With Water has recently formed an important partnership with the Hull & East Riding branch of the RSPCA to provide guidance on how to protect pets in the event of a flood. We understand that pets are family too and it’s vital they are protected in an emergency. The needs of pets can sometimes be overlooked, particularly during emergencies such as flooding. This collaboration aims to raise awareness of flood risks and highlight the importance of planning and preparing to ensure the safety of pets.
Make preparations for your pets
If a flood alert warning is issued, make sure you have a plan in place not just for yourself, but for your pets too.
We’ve partnered with the RSPCA to raise awareness on how to protect your pet in the event of a flood. Here’s some guidance on how to prepare:
- Plan your escape route in case of an emergency.
- Make sure you can be contacted in an emergency.
- Keep phone numbers of people who can help you move your animals.
- Make sure you have suitable carriers and any other equipment you might need to transport your animals.
- Keep a supply of food for you and your animals in case of evacuation.
- For livestock and horses, fit any extra gates you would need for emergency access, and attach your details to all field gates.
During a flood
- Bring all small animals inside and, if possible, take them upstairs.
- For horses and livestock, move them to areas that are at low risk of being affected by the flood, e.g. high ground, stables, barns, temporary accommodation etc.
- Move food, bedding and fresh water to somewhere safe and dry.
- Keep familiar toys dry, as animals under stress will welcome something that smells of home.
- Seal up important documents such as microchip numbers, vets and vaccination details in a watertight bag, along with a photo of your pet in case they get lost.
Emergency support
If animals are stranded or in danger, don’t try to rescue them yourself.
